Firefox for the iPhone: Safari-based?
Malik is skeptical, mainly because of Apple’s draconian approval policies. Apple has already approved web browsers, but here’s the catch: they’re all based on Mobile Safari. They’re all really just add-ons, rather than full-blown independent browsers. Additionally, Mozilla isn’t stupid: you don’t invest time and energy into a project that you know will just be rejected.
That leads me to an interesting thought. Mozilla CEO John Lilly said that the app “[will] surprise people”. What could be more surprising than a WebKit-based Firefox? It could run on WebKit, but include an awesome bar, Weave, and all the other Fennec features.
Crazy idea? Heck yes. In fact, it probably won’t happen — Mozilla is pretty committed to Gecko. But still… food for thought.
OS News trashes Firefox 3.7’s Windows UI
I have to admit it: Firefox does look slightly more cluttered. My personal gripe is the new widgets; they look like OS X widgets.
Firefox 3.7’s UI: Who Littered All These Widgets All Over the Place?
Firefox/4.0 Windows Theme Mockups
Looks nice, but I think they’re starting to try and look too much like Chrome and IE (especially when you look at this in conjunction with some of the 3.7 ideas). KISS.
I really dislike the tabs-on-top “feature”. The combo stop/refresh/go feature is awesome, though.
New Firefox add-on in Ubuntu Karmic redirects Google searches to… a custom search engine?
Apparently, the extension (enabled by default) automatically opens all new tabs to the Ubuntu Start Page. Worse, all searches using the Google search bar in the top right redirect to an Ubuntu custom search engine, which (to the ire of the forum) includes ads at the top.
Pretty pathetic at a first glance, though I think I’ll wait to pass judgment until after Canonical gets back.
Edit: Bug report is up.
Firefox’s main challengers: Chrome and Safari?
Interesting article from CNET. It does seem like Chrome and Safari are targeting Firefox (lots of their features would only appeal to the Firefox fan base), though of course, everyone claims that they’re just targeting IE.
